A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
